How Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa Works for Remote Workers

Estonia continues to be a top-tier destination for remote workers through its dedicated Digital Nomad Visa (DNV). This Type D long-stay visa allows non-EU/EEA citizens to live in the country for up to one year while working for employers or clients located outside Estonia. While the program has been active for several years, recent fee adjustments have standardized the cost at €120 for the state fee, with total application expenses generally staying under €500.

The visa provides full access to the Schengen Area for travel, making it a strategic base for exploring Europe. If you stay in Estonia for fewer than 183 days in a year, you generally avoid becoming a local tax resident. However, the program is strictly for remote work; you cannot take up local employment or seek permanent settlement under this specific visa category.

Who can apply

This program is designed for freelancers, remote employees, and business owners who earn a gross monthly income of at least €4,500. You must have maintained this income level for at least six months prior to applying. The visa is open to any non-EU/EEA national over the age of 18 who can provide a clean criminal record and proof of valid health insurance with at least €30,000 in coverage.

The application process

To get started, you will need to complete the online application form and schedule an appointment at an Estonian embassy, a VFS Global center, or a Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) office.

  • Gather six months of bank statements or invoices to prove your income.
  • Provide a copy of your remote work contract or business registration.
  • Submit proof of accommodation plans in Estonia.
  • Pay the €120 state fee at the time of your appointment.

The PPA typically processes applications within 30 days. Once approved, you must enter Estonia within 90 days and register your place of residence with the PPA within 30 days of arrival. You can check the latest nomad news for minor administrative updates.
