Here is the catch with Brazil's VITEM XIV nomad visa process

Brazil began issuing digital nomad visas fully online Sept. 1 for nationals who don't need a Brazilian visit visa. Applicants from countries that do need one still face an in-person consular appointment before receiving entry approval.

Consular portals handle online pre-screening

Foreign remote workers applying for the VITEM XIV nomad visa must initiate their filings through the Foreign Ministry's electronic portal. Applicants upload digital scans of foreign work contracts, proof of income, clean criminal records and passport identification pages.

Consular posts in cities like Ottawa and New Delhi use the e-Consular platform to validate scanned files from applicants who need a visit visa before approving submissions. Walk-in filings are barred across most of Brazil's consular network, making electronic pre-clearance mandatory for temporary visa applicants.

Paperwork now depends on nationality

Since Sept. 1, nationals who don't need a Brazilian visit visa, such as citizens of European Union countries, the U.K., Japan and Mexico, file the whole application in the Sistema Consular Integrado (SCI), upload their documents and receive the visa by email. They don't visit a consulate or hand over their passports. The change covers Brazil's temporary visas, including the digital nomad and investor visas.

Nationals who need a visit visa, such as citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and India, fill in the same online form and send documents through e-Consular, then attend an in-person appointment. Brazil's visitor e-Visa for Australian, Canadian and U.S. tourists already arrives by email, but remote workers from those countries navigating Brazil's residency rules still need the appointment for the nomad visa.

Core eligibility standards

Nomad applicants must satisfy the baseline requirements established under National Immigration Council Resolution RN 45/2021:

• $1,500 minimum monthly income from employers or clients based outside Brazil

• $18,000 in continuous bank balances as an alternative to monthly wage proof

• 12 months of initial temporary residence, renewable through domestic immigration channels

Nomads who enter Brazil under standard tourist visa exemptions can instead apply from inside the country through MigranteWeb, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security's online system. Every holder then registers in person with the Federal Police for the CRNM residence card; those who enter on the visa must register within 90 days of entry.
