Germany moved beyond online application intake July 29, when the Cabinet approved draft legislation allowing AI-assisted visa and residence-permit processing, though the proposal still needs parliamentary approval before taking effect.

Cabinet approval isn't final enactment

The draft would allow immigration authorities to use AI when processing asylum claims, visas and residence permits. Germany intends the technology to shorten waits, standardize checks and support case-by-case reviews, according to government information and news reports.

It won’t hand final decisions to software. Human officials would remain responsible for legal assessments and approvals and the draft must complete the legislative process before authorities can use its provisions.

Online visa applications are already available

Germany’s current operational change is its Consular Services Portal, which has accepted national-visa applications worldwide since Jan. 1, 2025. All 167 German visa sections offer the system, covering 28 national-visa categories, including employment, study, vocational training and family reunification.

Applicants upload documents for a preliminary digital check, then attend an in-person appointment for biometrics, fee payment and verification of originals. More than 70,000 applications had passed through the portal by Nov. 5, 2025, the federal government said.

The portal covers long-term national visas, not the standard process for Schengen visas generally used for stays of up to 90 days. Germany has no dedicated digital nomad visa, so remote workers must select an appropriate national visa or residence category under Germany’s residency rules.

Current applicants should follow the existing process

The AI draft creates no immediate filing deadline, application form or fee change. Applicants with pending or planned cases should continue using the existing online and in-person process rather than delay or refile while Parliament considers the legislation.

Separate migration-digitalization rules approved in December 2024 would centralize visa documents and permit authorities to reuse stored biometrics for some residence-permit renewals, reducing repeat appointments once those measures apply.
