Georgia waterfront demolitions remove nomad hubs in Batumi through July

What’s changing on Batumi’s waterfront
Batumi is clearing cafés, bars and small shorefront structures along parts of its boulevard and nearby coast as officials push to remove unauthorized and unsightly buildings. The work is tied to the city’s boulevard master plan and the wider coastal redevelopment effort in Adjara and authorities say cleared areas will be restored and landscaped.
Demolition was already under way by early February and local officials have described the campaign as intensively ongoing. Reports in April said the cleanup had expanded to stretches south of central Batumi, including Gonio-Kvariati.
Who feels it most
Tourists will see fewer casual seafront stops in parts of the Old Boulevard and along some beach areas. Digital nomads and expats who used waterfront cafés as informal work and meetup spots are losing some of the most convenient social hubs on the coast.
The change can also mean more noise, fencing and construction equipment near beachfront promenades. Businesses that sit on public land without valid permits or with expired leases are the main targets.
What to do before you book
If quiet matters for remote work, choose lodging a few blocks inland or outside the areas named in demolition reports. That should reduce the chance of living next to an active work zone.
Expect the disruption to continue through the 2026 summer season, with a more formal seafront and fewer ad hoc venues as the rebuild continues. For the latest timing and venue changes, check visa updates and Read our full Georgia guide for the complete picture.
