Egypt Updates Entry Rules for Western Travelers

Egypt is significantly lowering the barrier to entry for travelers from several major Western nations. Under a recently expanded policy, citizens from the US, UK, Canada, and the EU can now enter the country without paying visa fees or completing prior formalities. This shift allows for stays ranging from 30 to 90 days, depending on your specific nationality.

While Egypt does not yet offer a dedicated digital nomad visa, this update effectively streamlines life for remote workers. By removing the $25 fee and the need to queue for a visa on arrival, the government is positioning the country as a more friction-free destination for "slow travel" and short-term residency.

Who benefits from the update

The policy change primarily targets visitors who previously relied on the visa-on-arrival system.

  • Digital Nomads: You can now enter and work remotely for up to three months without an upfront visa application.
  • Short-term Expats: Those scouting Egypt for future residency can use these fee-free windows to explore neighborhoods in Cairo or Dahab.
  • Tourists: Leisure travelers from Greece, France, Germany, Italy, and other EU states now face zero entry costs.

The government has also signaled plans to extend these same privileges to citizens of Australia and Japan in the near future.

Entry requirements and next steps

The process is now remarkably simple. To take advantage of the fee-free entry, you only need a passport with at least six months of validity remaining from your date of arrival. There is no need to apply for an e-visa or visit a consulate before your flight.

Keep in mind that while the entry is free, overstaying your allotted 30 to 90 days can still result in fines at the airport upon departure. For those planning to stay longer than three months, you will still need to apply for a formal residence permit or a different visa category. You can stay informed on further nomad news as Egypt continues to chase its goal of 30 million annual visitors by 2030.
