China Updates Visa-Free Entry Rules for Canadians
Starting February 17, 2026, Canadian passport holders can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism, business, or family visits. This temporary policy, running through December 31, 2026, significantly reduces the cost and administrative burden for Canadian nomads and travelers.
China Updates Visa-Free Entry Rules for Canadians
Canadian travelers now have a significantly easier path into mainland China. Following a diplomatic shift in early 2026, China has added Canada to its growing list of nations granted 30-day visa-free entry. This pilot program is currently scheduled to run through December 31, 2026, allowing for multiple entries during the window.
How the Policy Works
The new rules apply to holders of ordinary Canadian passports entering for tourism, business, family visits, or transit. This is a major expansion from previous years, where visa-free access for Canadians was largely restricted to Hainan province or short-term transit windows. You can now explore the entire mainland without the administrative hurdle of a formal visa application.
To enter, you must meet a few basic requirements:
- A passport valid for at least six months.
- Confirmed proof of accommodation and a return or onward ticket.
- Entry for non-remunerated activities only.
Impact for Digital Nomads
For nomads and business travelers, this change eliminates the biometric enrollment and CAD $140–$180 fees previously required for a standard L-class visa. It is an ideal setup for scouting locations, attending trade fairs, or short-term remote work stints.
However, the 30-day limit is strict. If you plan to stay longer, or if you intend to take up local employment or enroll in degree-level studies, you still need to apply for the corresponding Z or X class visas. For those just looking to hop between major hubs like Shanghai and Beijing, the process is now as simple as showing up at the border with your onward flight info.
