Canada Updates Super Visa Income Rules

Canada is making it easier for families to reunite through updated financial requirements for the Super Visa. Effective March 31, 2026, the IRCC allows hosts to prove their financial stability using income from either of the two preceding tax years. In a significant shift, hosts can now supplement their own earnings with the income of the visiting parents or grandparents, provided the host meets a minimum percentage threshold.

The Super Visa remains a unique option for long-term visits, allowing eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time. The visa itself is a multiple-entry document valid for up to 10 years, offering much more flexibility than a standard visitor visa.

Who this affects

This update primarily impacts Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to bring their family members to Canada for extended periods. While it doesn't directly change the status for solo digital nomads or typical expats, it provides a more accessible pathway for those with Canadian ties to support elderly relatives.

Keep in mind that Super Visa holders are strictly visitors. They are not permitted to work or study during their stay, though they can enjoy multiple entries without the six-month limit typical of standard tourism.

What you need to do

If you are planning to host a relative, you must be at least 18 years old and provide a signed letter of invitation promising financial support. You will need to submit proof of income, such as a CRA Notice of Assessment, T4s, or recent pay stubs.

Current income thresholds are based on your total household size:

  • $30,526 CAD for a household of one
  • $64,336 CAD for a household of five
  • An additional $8,224 CAD for each extra family member

Visitors must also pass a medical exam and secure private health insurance from an approved provider with at least $100,000 in coverage. Applications generally take between 90 and 120 days to process, so plan your visa updates well in advance of any travel dates.
