Brunei citizens keep 14-day visa-free status in Taiwan through July 31

Taiwan's trial visa-free program for Brunei was set to expire July 31, 2026. It won't. Bruneian passport holders keep their 14-day visa-free access to Taiwan through July 31, 2027, after Taipei renewed the arrangement for another year.
The rolling one-year extension holds
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended the trial 14-day visa-free entry program covering Brunei, Thailand and the Philippines from Aug. 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027. Nothing about the terms changed. Brunei ordinary passport holders and Certificate of Identity holders can still enter Taiwan without a prior visa for stays of up to 14 days, tied to the New Southbound Policy.
The renewal closes what would have been a gap starting Aug. 1, 2026. The previous extension ran only through July 31, 2026 and Taiwan has now renewed the trial in one-year increments every year since 2018-2019, conditioned on tourism and economic outcomes.
Diplomatic and official passport holders are excluded. So are airline and vessel crew arriving to report for duty.
What Brunei travelers must bring to the border
The visa-free entry isn't automatic. Border officers can turn travelers away when the paperwork doesn't hold up.
Requirements for the 14-day visa-free entry:
- Passport: Brunei ordinary passport or Certificate of Identity valid at least six months on the date of entry
- Onward travel: confirmed return or onward ticket by air or sea with a reserved seat
- Accommodation: hotel reservation or host address and contact details in Taiwan
- Funds: proof of enough money for the stay
- Clean record: no serious criminal history
- Taiwan Arrival Card: filed online within 7 days before arrival , paper cards were retired Oct. 1, 2025
The 14-day count starts the day after arrival. The stay isn't extendable and travelers can't switch to a work or residence permit from inside Taiwan. Anyone planning employment, study or long-term stay has to apply for the right visa from abroad. Bruneians using Taiwan as a short-stay hub between trips need to plan reset flights accordingly, since overstaying carries penalties and future entry risks.
Two-way visa-free travel now locked in
The extension pairs with Brunei's own move on June 23, 2025, when it replaced visa-on-arrival with 14-day visa-free entry for Taiwanese passport holders. That gives dual-direction short-stay access for anyone splitting time between the two jurisdictions , useful for regional business travelers and remote workers based partly in Brunei who route through Taipei.
No fee applies to the Taiwan visa-free entry. Travelers just meet the conditions at the border.
