How Bahrain’s residency paths work

Bahrain’s self-sponsorship residence permit lets foreign property owners sponsor themselves instead of relying on an employer or family member. The permit is tied to residential property worth at least BHD 50,000 and sits alongside the kingdom’s Golden Residency route, which offers renewable 10-year permits for eligible professionals, retirees, investors and talented people.

The Golden Residency program doesn't require a minimum stay and allows holders to work freely and sponsor family members. Bahrain’s Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs office also has emergency visit visa extensions in place for some stranded travelers and overstayers.

Who the permits cover

The self-sponsorship route is the clearest fit for expats and remote workers who want a long stay without employer sponsorship. Applicants need property ownership, bank deposits, external income, health insurance and other documents, so it isn't a light-touch nomad visa.

Families can be included under Golden Residency, while travelers caught by regional disruptions have benefited from visa extensions and fee waivers. Bahrain’s official visa and residency portals are handling applications and status updates online and the government has left these pathways open to more long-stay visitors through its broader residency rules.

How to apply now

Applicants for self-sponsorship need a BHD 5 application fee, plus permit fees of BHD 200 to BHD 600 depending on validity, according to official guidance. The list of requirements includes a title deed, passport, bank statements, a BHD 15,000 bank deposit, proof of at least BHD 500 in monthly external income and Bahrain health insurance.

Golden Residency applicants face higher thresholds, including either salary or pension income of BHD 2,000 a month or property worth at least BHD 130,000. Processing can take about 40 working days, so applicants moving from a work visa or tourist stay should plan ahead and log in through the official government portal or NPRA channels.
