Travelers entering Australia face strict identity verification at automated kiosks, where clearance depends on exact passport-to-visa data matching and potential biometric screening.

Arrivals SmartGate processing remains open to travelers holding an ePassport who are at least 7 years old and taller than 1.1 meters, though children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The system uses facial recognition to match passengers against travel documents. Departures SmartGate accepts any valid machine-readable passport if the traveler can use the gate independently, the Australian Border Force confirmed.

Non-citizens crossing the border may also be selected for on-the-spot fingerprint verification. Officers scan at least four fingerprints to cross-check against immigration and law enforcement databases. Border authorities delete the scan files immediately once the identity check concludes.

Exact passport matching for visa holders

The Department of Home Affairs links visas electronically to the specific passport submitted during the initial application. Any discrepancy between an Electronic Travel Authority or visa grant notice and the physical passport presented at boarding can lead to check-in delays or entry refusal, the agency warned.
