Armenia Updates Immigration Rules and Work Entry Visas
Armenia is introducing a new 120-day work visa and removing labor market testing requirements, making it significantly easier for foreign workers to relocate.
Armenia Updates Immigration Rules and Work Entry Visas
Armenia is overhauling its immigration system to streamline how foreign professionals and remote workers enter the country. The government recently adopted a law that removes the "labor market test," meaning employers no longer have to prove a local citizen isn't available before hiring a foreigner. While this simplifies the process, the state will now manage foreign worker volume through an annual quota system for residence permits.
A major highlight of the reform is a dedicated work entry visa allowing stays of up to 120 days per calendar year. This visa serves as a prerequisite for those transitionary to a longer-term temporary residence permit. To modernize the experience, all applications are moving to a fully digital portal, though you will still need to provide biometrics in person to receive your final residency card.
Who is affected
These changes primarily impact foreign workers in the IT, tourism, and construction sectors. Digital nomads and remote workers who previously relied on business visas or informal stays now have a clearer, legitimate path for short-term projects. While there is no specific "nomad visa" yet, the new 120-day work visa fills a significant gap for those staying longer than a standard tourist visit.
What you need to do
If you are planning to work from Armenia, keep these dates and requirements in mind:
- The core reforms take effect November 1, 2026, with updated government fees starting January 1, 2027.
- The 120-day work visa will cost approximately AMD 15,000 (USD 38) and can be obtained via Armenian embassies or the e-visa portal.
- Once the digital portal is live, you must notify the government of any employer changes or absences exceeding 183 days within a year.
- Ensure you have your passport, a health reference, and your employment contract ready for the online upload.
