United Arab Emirates deploys 12 second mobile passport checks in Dubai

Passport officers across Dubai airports are now approaching travelers directly in queues with handheld scanners to complete border checks in 12 to 15 seconds.

Handheld clearance replaces fixed counter queues

The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) officially launched the Click and Travel system on Sept. 7, deploying roaming border officers across terminal waiting areas during peak travel periods. Officers use portable biometric terminals that read electronic passports, capture facial biometrics and verify fingerprints against government databases on the spot.

More than 31,000 passengers cleared trials between May and Aug. 31 before full deployment, officials confirmed. The service functions as an operational buffer alongside standard immigration counters and automated smart gates rather than replacing them. Travelers don't need to register in advance, download an app or pay additional fees, as the mobile scanners link directly to existing immigration and civil status files.

Eligibility differences for arrivals and departures

Access to mobile clearance depends on direction of travel and immigration status:

• Departing passengers: Open to all traveler categories, including international tourists, transit passengers and remote workers leaving the country.

• Arriving passengers: Restricted at launch to UAE citizens, UAE residents and GCC nationals, with plans to widen eligibility to general tourists later.

• Traditional lanes: Standard passport counters and automated smart gates remain operational for all travelers who aren't approached by roaming teams.

Remote workers holding United Arab Emirates residency through remote work visas or company sponsorship can use the handheld service for both entry and exit. Short-term visitors will only encounter the mobile officers when departing Dubai, meaning standard entry lines or smart gates still apply upon initial landing.
