Long-stay nomads can now file South Africa visa extensions nearer expiry

South Africa has waived the requirement to file qualifying in-country visa extensions and status-change applications at least 60 days before expiry. Long-stay nomads covered by that deadline can now apply closer to expiry, provided their existing visa remains valid. The minister of home affairs issued the directive Oct. 2, 2026.

A waived deadline, not a repealed rule

The 60-day requirement generally affected visas valid for more than 90 days. The waiver covers applications to extend a visa or change its status or conditions.

The underlying regulations haven't been amended or repealed and the directive gives no end date. This is a waiver of their application, not their removal from the regulations.

Shorter visas retain their separate filing deadlines, including the seven-day deadline for visas valid for 30 days.

Which long-stay nomads gain filing flexibility

For remote workers holding visas valid for more than 90 days, the practical benefit is a wider filing window for a qualifying extension. South Africa's nomad visa requires a signed contract with a foreign-based employer.

Foreign freelancers and workers with South African employers should distinguish filing timing from permission to work. The documented change concerns extension and status-change deadlines; it isn't a new work authorization or a change to tax residency rules.

Short-stay travelers shouldn't assume the waiver removes their own deadlines. Nor does it cover an application submitted after the existing visa has expired.

Pending applicants don't need to refile

The waiver covers future applications, applications awaiting a decision and pending appeals against refusals based on the 60-day deadline. Previously, Home Affairs accepted applications filed inside that window but refused them during review.

Applicants with covered pending applications or appeals don't need to take action to benefit; they can await a decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can a qualifying extension be filed within 60 days of expiry?
Yes. The waiver allows filing closer to expiry, but the existing visa must still be valid when the application is submitted.
Does the waiver cover expired visas?
No. Applications submitted after the existing visa has expired aren't covered.
Does the seven-day deadline for a 30-day visa still apply?
Yes. The waiver doesn't remove that separate shorter-visa deadline.
Do pending applicants or appellants need to refile?
Applicants with covered pending applications or appeals don't need to take action to benefit and can await a decision.
Has South Africa permanently deleted the 60-day rule?
No. The regulations haven't been amended or repealed; their application has been waived. The directive gives no end date.
