Norway's national railway operator Vy will cancel 434 train departures across Eastern Norway on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 as an ongoing locomotive-driver strike escalates.

Rail cancellations across Eastern Norway starting Oct. 5

The strike action intensifies on Monday, Oct. 5, when 26 additional drivers join the 46 drivers who walked out on Sept. 18, bringing the total strike force to 72, the union announced. The walkout hits drivers based in Oslo, Hamar and Kongsvinger, knocking out 193 scheduled departures on Monday and 241 on Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to Vy's operational updates.

The R14 line between Asker and Kongsvinger faces the heaviest cuts. Vy is canceling 40 of 42 scheduled R14 trips on Monday and all 42 trips on Tuesday, leaving the corridor virtually shut down. Commuters and digital nomads traveling through Norway may will encounter major disruptions across several additional key routes:

  • RE10 (Drammen,Lillehammer): 28 cancellations Monday, 31 Tuesday.

  • L2 (Stabekk,Ski): 41 cancellations Monday.

  • R23 (Oslo S,Ski): 38 cancellations Tuesday.

  • Regional lines: Disruptions to Oslo,Gjøvik, Oslo,Halden/Göteborg and services toward Mysen and Rakkestad.

Disruption schedules currently run through Oct. 7, but Vy warns that operational rosters change daily based on driver availability.

Vy's replacement and reimbursement limits

Vy won't provide emergency replacement buses, taxis or chartered flights for canceled strike departures, the operator confirmed. Pre-scheduled maintenance bus replacements planned before the labor action remain running, but no surge road transport will fill strike gaps.

Travelers may book their own alternative transport, but Vy limits reimbursements strictly to comparable scheduled public transit. This includes ordinary local buses, standard regional trains or city metro lines, provided the passenger held a valid ticket before the strike took effect. Vy explicitly excludes taxis, ride-shares, rental cars, flights and private vehicle costs from reimbursement coverage.

The railway's standard Travel Guarantee provision, which normally mandates alternate transport arrangements, doesn't apply during strike actions, Vy noted.

Ticket refunds, same-day rebooking and delay claims

Passengers holding tickets for canceled departures can claim a full refund, but refunds aren't processed automatically. Flexible tickets can be canceled directly through a passenger's online account, while non-refundable or Low Fare tickets require submitting Vy's digital cancellation form or contacting customer service.

Travelers can use their ticket on another Vy service on the same day and along the same route at no extra charge. This allowance excludes the Oslo,Bergen line, any train requiring mandatory seat reservations and trains operated by competing rail firms.

For delayed journeys that do run, passengers holding tickets bought before the strike announcement qualify for 50% compensation under specific thresholds:

  • Delays exceeding 30 minutes on standard commuter and regional routes.

  • Delays exceeding 60 minutes on the Oslo,Bergen and Flåm,Myrdal routes.

If a passenger is stranded mid-journey and requires an overnight stay, Vy will cover necessary hotel accommodation for up to three nights. Vy won't cover consequential damages, including missed flights, tours, hotel reservations or event bookings.

Expense claims and compensation requests must be submitted in writing within three months of the travel date with original tickets and receipts attached, Vy stated. Approved claims are paid within one month.

Immediate moves for affected travelers

Travelers moving across Eastern Norway must verify their specific connection in the Vy app or at vy.no immediately before heading to the platform. The planner displays only departures confirmed to operate; if a scheduled train is missing from search results, it has been canceled.

If you must switch routes, book scheduled public buses or local metro lines instead of taxis if you plan to seek reimbursement. Retain all digital receipts and original ticket reference numbers. Passengers needing disability assistance who choose not to travel must cancel existing bookings with Bane NOR at +47 477 70 098 to free up personnel. Keep monitoring live travel updates before booking non-refundable connections out of Oslo.
