Laos immigration authorities have been issuing select tourist e-Visas with a temporary 180-day entry window, tripling the standard 60-day arrival deadline shown in official portal regulations.

Discrepancy between approval letters and public rules

The relaxed timeline applies to newly issued approvals for the Tourist Visa T-B3, giving travelers extra leeway to enter the country before their authorization lapses.

The measure was first observed in April 2026 and remained visible on approvals issued through September 2026, reported travel agency Action-Visas and VisasNews on Sept. 17. Approval notices reviewed by visa agencies cite "current travel conditions affecting certain regions" as the reason for the extended validity window.

The underlying terms of the visa haven't changed. The authorization remains strictly single-entry and limits visitors to a maximum stay of 30 days once stamped into Laos, per official portal terms.

Material conflicts persist between issued paperwork and the government's public documentation. The official Lao eVisa portal FAQ and terms of service continue to state that approvals expire after 60 days, creating confusion for those planning a route through Laos. Because Lao authorities have published no formal circular or ministerial order confirming a blanket rule change, the longer window operates as an individual approval measure rather than a codified national policy.

Checkpoints, requirements and digital forms

The e-Visa system remains restricted to standard tourist travel and requires ordinary passports with more than 180 days of remaining validity from the arrival date. Applications must be completed online at least five days ahead of travel, with processing typically taking three working days. Application fees vary by nationality, exclude payment processing surcharges and remain non-refundable.

Travelers holding an approved e-Visa must print the approval letter and present it at one of nine designated entry points:

The expanded entry window provides a rescheduling buffer for delayed flights or shifted itineraries, but it offers zero residency or labor privileges. The terms of the Tourist Visa T-B3 strictly ban paid and unpaid local employment. It doesn't function as a digital nomad visa or permit multiple border runs on a single grant.
