Free India e-Tourist visas for Thai citizens now available through Dec. 31

Thai passport holders now pay $0 in government fees for short-term tourist travel to India, following a fee waiver running through Dec. 31, 2027.

Gratis entry terms through Dec. 31, 2027

India eliminated the visa application fee for Thai citizens applying for a 30-day e-Tourist visa, the Embassy of India in Bangkok announced Sept. 11. The arrangement grants the double-entry electronic permit on a gratis basis until the end of 2027 or until the government issues further orders, according to embassy notices and regional reports.

Under the updated fee schedule, ordinary Thai passport holders save the standard fee previously charged during online processing. The permit allows two entries within its 30-day validity window, catering to short vacations, spiritual retreats and quick border hops.

The financial relief applies strictly to the consular visa fee itself. Applicants must still cover any third-party payment processing charges or ancillary service fees if they arise during filing, though the baseline visa cost drops entirely to zero.

Application rules and Electronic Travel Authorization requirements

The fee waiver doesn't establish visa-free border access. Thai travelers must still complete the full application on India's official portal and secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to departure, India Today reported.

Airlines will deny boarding to passengers who arrive at airport check-in without an approved ETA document. Processing windows on the official government portal remain unchanged, meaning applicants should submit their forms at least four days ahead of their target arrival date.

Travelers must carry a printed copy of the approved ETA alongside a passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages for border stamps upon arrival at designated immigration checkpoints.

Exclusions for long-stay visas and foreign residents in Thailand

The exemption is narrow in scope and applies exclusively to nationality rather than regional residency. Foreign remote workers and expatriates residing in Thailand on local visas or long-term permits receive no fee discounts when organizing trips across the Bay of Bengal, per consular guidelines outlined in India's entry rules.

The zero-dollar rate also excludes non-tourist visa categories and extended tourist permits. Applicants requesting the following permissions must still pay standard rates:

• One-year and five-year e-Tourist visas

• e-Business visas

• e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant visas

• e-Conference visas

For a Thai remote worker planning a short exploratory trip across Delhi, Mumbai or Goa, the fee cut eliminates direct entry costs for a quick month-long stay. Those needing longer stays must purchase standard multi-entry permits at full price.

Timeline shifts from 2024 through 2027

India has adjusted fee exemptions for Thai visitors across multiple rolling intervals over the past two years. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs initially recorded a temporary fee exemption running from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2024, which Indian authorities later renewed through Dec. 31, 2025, per archived embassy records.

The Sept. 11 directive locks in the gratis policy for an additional two-year window through Dec. 31, 2027, establishing the longest continuous fee relief window granted to Thai nationals under the program to date.
